What to Pack When Moving and Making Considered Decisions Can Save Time, Labor and Money

Moving and Relocation Tips

In concept relocation sounds wonderful. You are going to a new place, a better workplace, a new country perhaps and you will make new friends. However, relocation is not without its pains and the greatest headache is to pack and arrange secure transportation of all your household items to ensure safe arrival. Another question is as to whether you want to take everything along with you when you move or discard some items. Even if you engage a packers and movers agency to handle the logistics you still have to decide on which things to include and which things to discard.

Make a list

Thinking things over in your mind is not much help. It is better to make a list of items in your possession. Make a detailed, room-by-room inventory on separate sheets of paper and you can think coolly as to which should be included.

Items to discard or to not pack

Take the list and consider each item carefully. Tick off items you can do without in your new location. Do this for each room and soon you have a rough list. Reconsider the list after you have completed all rooms in your house. Again check which items can be crossed off the list.

You can throw away things you do not need, sell them on olx or quikr or just gift them to friends who are willing to accept these things.

Then there is the matter of valuables and documents that should never be packed along with other furniture and household goods. Put them in a separate folder or container and carry them along with you when you move. Prior to this you can move them to a safe deposit vault in a bank.

Now that you have a list of things you can get packed for moving, there is one little thing that remains to be done. Check with Logistics Company that these are allowed for transport. If not, discard or sell or gift them away.

Furniture is heavy and expensive to transport as are cupboards and racks that you can well leave behind and buy new ones at the place where you shift to. If you are lucky you could be renting or owning a pre-furnished house.

Things to pack

Now that you have a list of all things in your house with items crossed off, it is time to finalize a list of things you must pack. It helps if you prepare a fresh list and again reconsider. You will find you can still leave out things.

While making the list segregate items according to type and category. For instance, electronic items can be put together in one list to be packed in one carton or a couple of cartons or wooden crates for overseas shipment. Fragile items like glassware and crockery that need special care should be set aside and first wrapped in foam or bubble wrap.

Segregate valuable items like antiques. Do you have insurance on these items? If not get them insured. The logistics company may cover the entire shipment with insurance but it may not take into account the value of the antiques.

Do you really need to take beds and cupboards along with you. Weigh the transportation cost against cost of new beds and furniture you can buy when you move. Your new house may be furnished. If your move is temporary, you may arrange warehousing of these items with the logistics company or just sell them.

If you must take furniture along check if they are modular and can be taken apart. If not, arrange with packers and movers for large sized cartons and crates.

Segregate items that have emotional value for you to be packed separately.

Do it yourself or engage professional packers?

Packing items on your own does ensure that you will take proper care of each item and pack them into boxes you can label accordingly. However, logistics services companies can offer packing in a professional way and it saves you a fair amount of time and labour. Just make sure you supervise the packing so that cartons are labeled appropriately and you know each item is being packed securely.

These days there are packers and movers offering an all inclusive service nationally or internationally targeting individuals who are relocating. Such packers and movers may also have corresponding arrangements with agencies at the destination that help you with unpacking and placing all items in appropriate places in your new house. With so many things to take care of when you are moving, it is best to engage an agency that handles it all.
